Matthews Arm is a nice small camping area in the northern part of Shenandoah National Park. There is a centrally located bath house. There are no tent pads, just large grassy sites to pitch a tent in. Most sites are large but somewhat uneven. There is a store a few miles down Skyline Drive (Elk Wallow). It should be noted that when I camped there in 2011 the camp hosts informed me that there were a mother bear with two cubs, an adolescent male bear, and an older male who all frequented the campground. I saw the adolscent male twice and heard some other campers who saw him. The camp hosts were excited to have the bears there. It's always exciting to see bears in the wild, but bears that become accustomed to being near people and raiding campsites develop into problem bears who must be moved or destroyed.
