REI Lookout 40 Backpack
This pack is good but not great. It's got all the features you want in a pack but just doesn't excel at anything, it doesn't have anything that makes it stand out above the rest. With a thick foam back panel, the pack is comfortable but not overly so and it can get hot in the summer because there is not enough airflow between the foam and your back. It has a fleece-lined optics pocket, a large zipper pocket on the front, and two mesh water bottle pockets. It's hydration bladder compatible, with left and right hose exit points. There are two small zipper pockets on the smallish waist belt. It holds 40 liters, which is nice when you need more that the 30 liters most daypacks provide. I've used this pack on overnights on the AT (with a tent even) and it gobbles up gear and asks for more. When it goes on clearance you can get this pack dirt cheap. It's a good backup to my main daypack and it's the pack I loan out to friends or family who are hiking with me and don't have a pack. Again, there's really nothign wrong with it, just nothing that grabs you and makes you shout "WOW"!
