The Todd Lake Area of the George Washington National Forest is just south of Harrisonburg, Virginia. There are a lot of nice hiking trails and some scenic lakes in this area. There is a pay campground, the Todd Lake Recreation Area Campground. But, if you drive past the Todd Lake area and continue on Forest Road (FR) 95, there are some excellent dispersed campsites that are first come first served, free, and you can stay in one for up to two weeks at a time. The campsite I stayed in was absolutely enormous. It could have held two full Boy Scout Troops. There were many other campgrounds I drove past that were equally large. This is definitely an area that we will use more often.
